“I’ve Got A lot To Say” Corey Graves’ Perplexing Past 24 Hours. From a downtrodden tweet, to an unexpected escalation; is the
Corey Graves situation one of a frustrated professional who feels unfairly
demoted or is it an amazing work leading to a potential WrestleMania moment? Let us dissect
the ins and outs of today’s latest developments.
The Breakdown:
Everyone who follows the world
of pro-wrestling is talking about a series of tweets today coming from Corey
Graves. Recently Graves was put on the commentary team for NXT (which both Echo
Oatmeal and I took issue with, but I digress).
The tweet seemingly spoke on that development and read as follows:
Following that tweet Graves once again sent out the
following message:
Not long after this tweet it was reported that Graves would
not be on NXT and he absolutely did not show and there was no discussion
concerning Graves. The Discussion:
Discombobulated Mom: “On the outset, you cannot help feel
for the man. To say the NXT commentary desk was chaotic last week is an
understatement. It wasn’t Graves’ fault either. I love me some Booker T, but
the style of Graves mixed with Vic Joseph and Booker didn’t mesh well to
me. They already have one guy bringing professionalism
in the form of Joseph. Booker tends to be the devil’s advocate to Joseph’s commentary,
which is what Graves is also known for, so it did not work for me. I don’t get how
for months we were teased with a 3-man smackdown commentary team. Why that
never happened is beyond me. Or even on RAW, why can’t McAfee and Graves flank Michael
Cole on commentary?”
Echo Oatmeal: “I think it is a totally understandable “crash
out”. I get guest commentating for New Year’s
Evil. That’s cool. However, I don’t see why he could not have stayed on RAW and
had the banter with McAfee. They could just promise him to have SNME. I just know I would be more than a little
upset if I were in the same position and I am known to be a McAfee fan.”
Discombobulated Mom: “The other question I have, wasn’t a
Graves in-ring return just teased to us fairly recently? On one hand, I feel
like this could be real; but on the other, the best storylines come from genuine
grievances and feelings. I feel like this could lead to a Royal Rumble return
for Graves. Others feel like this could lead to Graves VS McAfee at WrestleMania.”
Echo Oatmeal: “Yes, when he stood up to Logan Paul to defend
Michael Cole at King and Queen of the ring I think. I legit thought they were
teasing a match between the two. I totally believe this is a work. If it was left
to the one tweet this morning, it could have been real. I think things escalated way too quickly. I feel like he may pop up at the next RAW. It could be a setup for McAfee vs. Graves
(Personally though I want to see Pat vs. Dominik).”
Discombobulated Mom: “I really hope this is a work because
for the longest time Graves was being touted as Cole’s eventual replacement
when he retires. He is good at what he
does. You are young so you have not experienced this yet, and I hope you never
have to. However, nothing is worse than being the easy employee to get along
with. The one that is always ready to stand in when the part-time full-time
employee needs time off. It is disheartening to be the flexible one that goes
wherever needed for the “good of the company” only to be the one they crap on
because they just assume you will understand.
I really do not want that to be the case because it would not be a good
look for WWE.”
Echo Oatmeal: “Ooooh! like Samantha! A lot of people hate on
her for her exit, but I did not. I found it a bad look on WWE to replace her
with Lilian Garcia so quickly after Lilian was a guest announcer. It made Samantha
more credible in her complaints. I also don’t like how I have heard how WWE has
so much control over outside projects. So as much as I miss her, I wasn’t mad at
her for leaving.”
Discombobulated Mom: “Oh,
that situation is a whole other analogy I can match in life. She never wanted to stay the announcer. That
was her foot in the door. She did her
job and a good one and WWE said they could not see her in another role. Once again, you do not know what this is like
in your young life. but one trick some
companies like to do is they will hire someone in an intro position and if they
are exceptional at their job, when it comes time to promote, they will pull
someone in from outside of the company with less experience than the entry
level person. They will leave the good worker in entry level rather than
promote, because they do not want to train two people. That is just my experience, not necessarily
the issue with WWE, but too often employers get into an “If it isn’t broken,
let’s not fix it” mentality. Normal
people don’t stay content to remain on the bottom wrung anywhere in life. Would
you want to stay flipping burgers, or as a cashier or bus boy? No one could blame
anyone in life for wanting to better themselves, yet as you correctly point
out, she got so much hate.
Echo Oatmeal: “I just want to point out that Graves’ own
brother says this is not a work. “
Discombobulated Mom: “I guess only time will tell. We will
know if he gets released.” Eventually, McAfee is going to go back to the world
of college football. I hope if this is
real, that they work something out. “
Echo Oatmeal: “Maybe saying it’s not a work is a work. Haha!
I just hope they do come to an agreement if it is not. I like Corey Graves, and
I do personally think he is the best one on commentary outside of Michael Cole.
I just don’t think he would be crazy enough to post he had “A lot to say” if he
really was going to say it. Those moments are better had as a surprise. “
Final Thoughts
So now that you know the details and have read our discussion,
what do you think? Is Graves’ behavior a work or is it the actions of a legitimate
disgruntled employee? What would you like to see happen in this situation? How
would you like to see his comeback to wrestling and what opponent would you
chose for him? If he and WWE do part
ways, where would you want to see him land? Join the discussion.
